Childish Gambino Releases Political Video and Song, “This Is America”
Donald Glover hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend and pulled double duty as musical guest. He performed two new Childish Gambino songs, including the rousing “This Is America”. The clip for the song hit the web in the wee hours of Sunday morning. The surreal video mixes stark violence with joyful choreography to send a message about America’s gun problem. GLAAD Media Awards Honor Gloria Carter, Samira Wiley, Ava Duvernay
The 29thannual GLAAD Media Awards, which honor LGBTQ public figures and allies, were held in New York Saturday night. Samira Wiley, star of Orange Is The New Black and The Handmaid’s Tale, received the Vito Russo Award. Ava Duvernay was honored for Excellence in Media. Monique Heart Talks Drag Race Elimination, Cost of Competing
RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10 saw Monique Heart sashay away last week. The lively queen opened up to Vultureabout the competition and the role race and money play in the drag industry. “There’s a difference in just the simple fact that the other girls that are not black work more than the black girls,” she said. She also mentioned plans to fund next season’s underdog queen.
Kendrick Lamar Kicks Off TDE Championship Tour
This weekend saw the launch of the TDE Championship Tour, an all-star jaunt headlined by Kendrick Lamar and featuring his label’s full roster of talent. Other acts include SZA, SiR, and Jay Rock. Rolling Stone’s Andrew Gospe declared the tour a victory lap for the fledgling label and showed praise for Lamar and SZA’s command of the crowd.
Meek Mill Joins PA Governor in Press Conference
Meek Mill, who was recently released from prison after serving a harsh sentence for a parole violation, spoke at a press conference with Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf last week. Donald Glover appeared on SNL this weekend in advance of Atlanta’s season 2 finale. The penultimate episode, “FUBU”, used a middle school flashback to tell a powerful story. Vulture’s Bryan Washington praised the episode as a triumph:
We see, for the first time in who knows how long, the perspective of a black kid in school, and without a white gaze overhead, or the constant stabilization of a laugh track, or a teaspoon of medicine waiting in the wings, or with our hands held by a now-knowledgeable omniscient entity, or as the overlong preamble to some overly tidy bit.
