RuPaul’s Drag Race, Untucked Renewed

Shante, you stay. RuPaul’s Drag Race and its aftershow, Untucked, have been renewed for another season at VH1. The current 10thseason is the most watched in the franchise’s history. The show originally aired on gay cable network Logo, where it’s still simulcast.  Drag Race moved to VH1 in 2017. Nas Announces Queens Listening Party for New Album

We’re now 4 weeks into G.O.O.D. Music’s summer music barrage—5 back-to-back album releases all produced by Kanye West.  Next up is veteran rapper Nas, whose as-yet-untitled project hits streaming services Friday.  He’ll celebrate the release—his first in 6 years—with a Queens listening party Thursday night.  That leaves one more release from Teyana Taylor on June 22.  Read more about the listening party at Pitchfork.

Playboi Carti Heads Out on Summer Tour

Rapper Playboi Carti, a critical fave who released his debut LP Die Lit earlier this year, will kick off his North American tour July 24. The summer run starts in San Francisco and wraps August 17 in Atlanta.  He recently graced the SNL stage with Nicki Minaj during the show’s May finale.  See the full itinerary at Rolling Stone.

Future Wraps Record-Breaking Hot 100 Streak

Though Future hasn’t released a new solo record in 2018, that hasn’t stopped him from making chart history.  Now that “King’s Dead”, from the Black Panther soundtrack, has dropped off the chart, he concludes a 166-week run on the Billboard Hot 100.  It’s the fifth longest streak in chart history.  The prolific rapper recently oversaw the soundtrack for the X-directed Superfly reboot.  Read more at Billboard.

Food for thought

First, it was SoundCloud rap, an online-only brand of lo-fi hip hop that resonated with young listeners. Now, SoundCloud R&B is having a moment, with singers like Jorja Smith, dvsn, Partynextdoor, and Majid Jordan moving beyond social media to find a larger audience.  Vulture offers the ultimate cheat sheetto help you learn who’s who.
