The five short film finalists for the 2018 American Black Film Festival’s HBO Short Film Competition are now streaming on HBO NOW.

Past entries have been submitted by the likes of Ryan Coogler (who directed last year’s Black Panther) and Rashaad Ernesto Green, who worked on Luke Cage.

The five films are Emergency by Carey Williams, Hair Wolf by Mariama Diallo, Moths & Butterflies by Alfonso Johnson, Days After Your Departure by Sam Sneed, and Suitable by Thembi L. Banks.

Moths & Butterflies took the top honor, with Johnson winning $10,000. Runners-up received $5,000 each, and all five films secured licensing deals with HBO.

André Holland and Zazie Beetz star in Steven Soderbergh’s latest film, High Flying Bird.  The movie was shot exclusively on an iPhone and follows the story of an agent navigating the politics of an NBA lockout.  The film hits Netflix on February 8.
