Mindy Kaling and Awkafina Score Big at Sundance - The Color Brief January 29
Mindy Kaling scored the first big sale of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Late Night, which she wrote and stars in, was sold to Amazon for $13 million.
The film offers a timely take on women’s struggles in the workplace and also stars Emma Thompson.
Additionally, the Awkafina-fronted film The Farewell was picked up by A24 for a rumored $6 million. In the film, Awkafina plays Billi, a Chinese-American woman who heads to China to visit her ailing grandmother and uncovers a heartbreaking plot taking place within her family.
Awkafina was a standout in last year’s hit film Crazy Rich Asians.

Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansmanis headed back to theaters, to capitalize on the awards season buzz. Lee picked up his first Best Director Oscar nod for the film, which is up for 6 trophies total.
And, fresh off the buzz from last year’s Sorry To Bother You, Boots Riley has signed a script deal with Annapurna Pictures. His buzzworthy debut film was noticeably absent from the Oscar nominations, which Riley has credited to not running an Oscar campaign.
