Just for some background insight before I begin, let me tell you a little bit about my political views…especially when it comes to the 2016 election:
I am a young 20-something-year-old woman. I am a registered Democratic voter. Why? Perhaps it has something to do with my upbringing. My parents are registered Democrats. My first election was for Obama’s second term. So in your heads, you probably have a clue as to where I stand when it comes to this election, and I may come off as biased. But, let me tell you, your assumptions may not all be true. While I am not a fan of either candidate running thus far, Clinton or Trump, I find myself confused as to whether or not I should bother going to the polls. But that is beside the point.
I want to share the most ridiculous comment I heard about why someone would vote for either candidate running. At this point, I feel as though I have heard it all. Democratic women and feminists are hell bent on a woman taking office. “We are making history. How the hell could you deny that? Do we need another old white man in office to deprive us of our reproductive rights?” My answer to that is hell no! But at the end of the day, the thought of Clinton taking office doesn’t sit right with me.
And on the other hand, Trump. Commonwealth or anyone who sees him as a leader because he’s a wealthy CEO's response: “He’s a great businessman! He will get us out of this trillion-dollar debt deficit.” Meanwhile there are those memes on Facebook pointing out that all of his businesses have gone bankrupt or television programs have been canceled. And don’t even get me started on his racial slurs. Another common response to people who claim to be pro-Trump also rests in his "doesn't give a fuck" demeanor. “He says what’s on his mind! He’d make a great leader! He says what ALL, rightful Americans are thinking!” But, is that really so? C’mon guys, this isn’t a playground we’re talking about. It’s the United States of America.
Anyway, I’d have to say that the most ignorant, idiotic reason I’ve heard anyone say they would readily elect Trump into office is because they cannot wait to see what couture gowns Melania Trump will wear at the Inauguration (let us pray) or any other public appearances. They absolutely cannot wait to see who will dress the First Lady. As someone who works in fashion for a living writing for a publication, this really embarrasses me on so many levels. One being, how can someone go to the polls on election day and fill in the ballot for that reason only? Another thought is, how many more people think this way? It embarrasses me that politicians time after time are seen as celebrities, more so their wives (given that all presidents have been men). We will watch Michelle Obama, Hilary Clinton, or any other woman who has run for president give a powerful speech. But I can honestly tell you, as someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes fashion, I did not care about the clothes on their backs. it was more about their message.
Perhaps, if we really tuned into the presidential elections without our eyes and went with common sense and rationality, things would be different. But even then, I anticipate disaster. Let's just say I quickly dropped the topic and went about my business, because after all, politics are not suitable for wok.
