Uptown Bourgeois is an arts, news, and culture blog created by New York-based freelance writer Jefferey Spivey. UB explores universal themes through a black, queer lens.

During any season of New York Fashion Week, attending usually means you've unofficially entered a best dressed competition.  Street style photographers wait in front of the venue anxiously awaiting the strongest looks, and the attendees do not disappoint.  The first NYFW: Men's saw amazing looks in all categories from streetwear to dapper gents.  Most days, I opted for a look that towed the line between dapper and casual.  But for my first day of shows, I went for a more comfortable, subtle statement.  When everyone else is dressing up, sometimes it's okay to dress down.

The clear statement is the RIOT sweatshirt-it's a symbol of how I'm choosing to go down a different path with my look.  Plus, there isn't much room for this sweatshirt in my everyday life as I wouldn't dare wear this to work.  What better place to work it into my wardrobe than Fashion Week? I've paired it with some simple cotton shorts and thrown in a chambray woven shirt around my waist for some texture and depth.  The black and white sneakers keep things casual, and the blue canvas tote adds in a bit of sophistication.

Overall, the look is quite simple and easy to achieve, but it still has just the right elements to turn a head or two amongst the crowd of the fashion elite.  Next time you have to construct a look for a large event, take a page from my book and deconstruct to stand out.
