I’ve had plenty of “senior moments” in my 32 years of life.  You know the ones.  I walk into the kitchen to grab something but forget what I need once I get there.  I can’t find my glasses or keys even though I just had them.  Sure, attaching the word senior to anything in my 30s seems a bit premature.  But according to The Guardian, memory loss starts to happen as early as age 45.  That’s not so far away.  So, keeping my brain in tip top shape is front of mind for me.  Luckily, there are tons of ways to exercise the mind and keep those memories intact.

Alpha-GPC

Alpha-GPC is a dietary supplement that’s commonly used by people with dementia or Alzheimer’s.  It’s also administered to people recovering from strokes.  Essentially, alpha-GPC is a natural choline compound that improves focus, memory, concentration, and general cognitive function.  The great news is this supplement isn’t reserved for seniors.  Guys like me can take it for a brain boost.  And it’s even found a secondary use as a bodybuilding supplement.  It improves muscle endurance and reduces fatigue.

Fitness & Nutrition

Not a fan of supplementation?  No problem.  Just make sure you’ve got a solid workout routine and nutritional plan in place.  Fruits and veggies with antioxidants, foods with omega-3 fatty acids, and even coconut oil all contribute to brain health.  Additionally, exercise has been proven to expand your brain’s memory center.  Forget about vanity and achieving that six pack you’ve always wanted.  Getting active could save your memories.

Brain Games

The next time someone looks down on you for playing games on your smartphone, pay them no mind.  As it turns out, brain games and apps are some of the most effective ways to give your mind a workout.  Just like your muscles, your mind needs exercise.  But this kind of activity combines fun with purpose.  Apps like Lumosity and Happify help to improve your cognitive ability, bump up your IQ, and improve your memory capacity.  If you want more options, CNN offers a comprehensive list.

Learn Something New

It might seem weird to learn something new if you can’t remember things you already know.  But learning new skills actually helps. These new activities strengthen the connection between different parts of your brain.  And learning is an even more effective way to protect your memories than brain games.

Sleep

Whether it’s a marathon YouTube session or an endless stream of work emails, our devices are keeping us up longer.  But without the proper amount of sleep, our brains don’t get the recovery time needed.  Sleep is important because it offers time for your memories to become solidified.  It provides the rest you need to focus and deliver the next day.  Without it, your mind seems foggy and you’re unable to concentrate.  Too many consecutive nights of bad sleep can have detrimental effects down the line.

From brain games to learning to Alpha-GPC, there are plenty of ways to boost your memory and keep your mind in peak shape.
